An “outrageous” amount of lost luggage has been seen sitting at Auckland Airport while fed-up travellers search for their missing possessions.

Debi Futter Puati says her daughter Samantha filmed the piles of unclaimed belongings when she went searching for her own missing suitcase at the airport, on December 3. The airport has said it’s concerned about the scale of missing bags arriving.

“The room was just stacked with hundreds, if not thousands of things belonging to people,” Debi said on Saturday.

“There were suitcases, surfboards, kitesurfers…things that are vitally important to people and that cost huge amounts of money. It’s an outrageous amount.”

Debi says when Samantha’s suitcase was recently lost between flights from Istanbul to Melbourne she was told by Qantas and Emirates it would catch up to her in Auckland.

However, after spending about three weeks trying to track it down by phone she went to the airport where she was invited to look for it herself. The video she took shows lines of trolleys piled with luggage in front of kiosks housing Menzies and Swissport; companies providing ground services for airlines using the airport.
